Wylderness Returns with New Single “Is It Summer”
Welsh shoegaze band Wylderness is back with their latest single, “Is It Summer.” The track will be released on March 3, 2025. Known for their dreamy yet gritty sound, the Cardiff-based band continues to blend nostalgic shoegaze with modern indie rock energy.
A Two-Part Sonic Journey
Wylderness explains the creation of the song:
“This started as a riff with lots of delay, played on an old Vox amp we found while practicing. We then jammed and it developed into a song with two parts. The first half has a cinematic feel, similar to Interpol. It reflects the wild west nature of the 90s tech boom. In the second half, the song erupts, with the outro saying, ‘Stand up, count everything / If you want to / If you want to.’”
The song features sun-drenched melodies and a wall of reverb-drenched guitars. “Is It Summer” draws comparisons to Ride, DIIV, Sonic Youth, and Yo La Tengo. It perfectly captures the spirit of shoegaze while staying fresh with modern production and dynamic changes.
A Band with a Strong Indie Legacy
Wylderness first gained attention with their debut album in 2018. Their music received support from BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, and popular outlets like Clash, DIY, and Drowned in Sound. Additionally, their track “On a Dais” was featured on the US version of the hit TV show Shameless.
In 2022, the band released their second album, Big Plans for a Blue World. This album added vintage synths and clarinet to their sound. It ranked #28 in Far Out Magazine’s Best Albums of 2022 and charted on the North American College & Community Radio Chart.
What’s Next for Wylderness?
“Is It Summer” marks the beginning of an exciting year for Wylderness. The band is set to release their highly anticipated Safe Mode EP. Recorded with Andrew Sanders and longtime collaborator Rory Attwell, the EP will showcase their musical growth while staying true to their signature sound.
