Indie solo artist Michael Cooke releases new single ‘Losing My Mind For Nothing’
Glasgow based singer-songwriter Michael Cooke has come bursting onto the scene with his new single Losing My Mind For Nothing.
The track starts with a slow yet punchy guitar pattern, easing the listener in to this emotional adventure.
As the tune progresses, the sounds begin to build up as you approach the chorus. As it hits, Cooke’s self-reflective mantra about not “losing my mind for nothing” comes into play.
For me, the song epitomises how you can’t let life pass you by. With lyrics such as “I’m done thinking about yesterday” it gives a clear signal that the maxim carpe diem is incredibly important to Cooke.
Halfway through the song, the melodic tunes gently fade away to give the guitar solo time to breathe.
When the first few notes ring out, it would seem the solo has taken influence from a few old friends in the genre – corny way to introduce The Beatles, I know.
The solo does something that many indie tunes seem to have forgotten recently – let it be its own entity.
With the solo at the forefront of the track at this point, it gives new life to the song, whilst also expressing the importance of instruments as well as lyrics.
As mentioned earlier, the solo also harks back to the great artists of the 60’s, a big influence of Michael’s music.
Whilst maybe not as heavy rock as the guitar solo from ‘Revolution’ by The Beatles, the importance Michael allows it to have in his track is almost identical.
After the Lennon and McCartney -esque guitar section, the tune returns to its roots. It continues to provide a melodic tune, similar to that of ‘The 17th’ by the Courteeners.
Michael states how the music his parents listened to also played a big part in the production of his music, mainly 60’s folk rock. This is something that is clear to see from his single.
The folk rock style is very reminiscent of bands like Elbow who utilise these punchier yet soothing guitar chords. As well, the harmony between vocals and instruments brings a likeness to other solo artists such as Gerry Cinnamon.
After careers in both acting and sport, Michael has decided to turn to his other passion, music.
His music helps him to really “introduce his personality, without having to conform to pre-written parts”.
Ideas like this are clear to see from his music, with the raw and stripped back feel that is in Losing My Mind For Nothing.
He feels as though music is his true calling that allows him to interact with an audience on his own terms. Something that is apparent in his debut album Doin Alright.
The album is heavily influenced by the indie genre as well as the 60’s folk rock scene.
